Success Is Objective

We've been conditioned on how we view success. But the typical things that people define as success is making us all miserable. Listen to Episode 038 of Her Messy Bun Podcast to learn what success means to you or keep reading.

How to Define Success as an Entrepreneur

Success is objective, what success looks like to you is different than what your neighbor views as success, so first we will talk about how you can start to define what success means for yourself, how to make it happen, and how to keep the momentum going.

What people typically consider to be success:

  • money like having a big salary

  • job title - what you do “defines” your worth

  • material things like cars, houses, clothes

  • having a partner, family

Success without integrity is failure. Growing up, we're conditioned to believe certain things about what success actually means, and then we try and get those things, but then more often than not, those things don't inherently make us happy. This is why it's super important to get clear on what success means for you specifically — because otherwise, you'll end up on the hamster wheel

How to define success:

Grab a notebook and pen and ask yourself these 3 questions:

  • What is my big picture goal?

  • What do I want my life to look like?

  • Am I currently living and practicing habits that will allow me to get closer to my big picture goals?

How to cultivate success:

When planning new goals for ourselves we make these huge blanket statements of what it is we actually want. I want to have more money, I want to be rich, I want to a family, I want to be more active - they're all blanket statements that aren't specific enough.

In order to cultivate the achievements that you're looking for you have to really niche down and get specific about what you want. Then create specific but small measurable steps that you can accomplish to get there.

How do you want to get more money, what kind of family do you want, how are you going to be more active?

The best example I have is for being more active, rather than telling yourself you're going to workout everyday, why not start with parking at the end of the parking lot when you go to the store. This small adjustment is in and of itself small, but the habit once ingrained will allow you to make these small adjustment later on.

Once you're clear on what you want:

  • remember that this mentality goes against what most people think — you will see stuff on social media that might trigger your old beliefs about success

  • put your blinders on and remember what your goals are and WHY you chose them

  • don't succumb to hustle & grind culture
