11 Habits to Start Today

A few weeks back I shared on TikTok some of the habits to include in your daily/weekly routine as a creative entrepreneur.

After 5+ years of being self-employed, I can confidently say if you are trying to grow your business without burning out you need to try these 11 habits.

1. Morning Pages

This is the biggest game changer. The benefits to morning pages are untouched and something I think every one - regardless their career - should try. As most of you know, I’ve adjusted how I do morning pages to be geared towards helping the creative entrepreneur with ADHD. If you want to learn more about it in Season 3 Episode 6: What Are Morning Pages.

Benefits of morning pages include:

  • Process your thoughts more fully

  • Silence your imposter syndrome

  • More confidence

  • Clear understanding of your goals

  • Creative flow

  • Intentional with your decisions

  • Less anxiety

  • Proud of your accomplishments

  • Self-awareness

  • More focus

  • Business mindset

  • Gain more energy throughout the day

Morning pages has had such an impact on my self-employment journey that I’ve not only recommended them to everyone I know, but I also included live daily group morning pages into my membership Consciously Creative. If you want to see what a live session is like check out this video:

2. Meditation

As someone who’s brain quite literally won’t shut off, I used to find meditation impossible to stick to. Do I do it everyday? Well… Technically yes because Morning Pages is officially considered a meditative practice, but other than that no.

My favorite meditation practices and recommendations:

  • listening to high frequency sounds while doing breath work

  • Reiki, specifically the Energetic Refresher with Molly Donlan (more commonly known as @m0dizzl3 on TikTok) This one on one session is exactly what you need if you are looking to feel refreshed, relaxed and energetically aligned. The last one I did helped me find the internal peace and calm I was looking for a busy, self-employed, pregnant mom with ADHD that’s completely overstimulated. She not only did a guided session, but she gave me the tools I needed to be able to reset my internal calm and protect my energy. Use code HERMESSYBUN to get $10 off your first session.

  • Finally some of my favorite guided meditation is found on youtube. Specifically from Great Meditation. When you’re in a pinch or it’s not in your budget - these videos are broken up to help you in very specific parts of your life.

3. Go for walks

This might seem like the most basic piece of advice, but when you are self-employed and working from home you are likely NOT including activity into your day. When I was in my early stages as an entrepreneur I was stuck in the toxic hustle and grind culture. Work. Work. Work.

Including daily walks into my routine not only got me up and out of the house away from my computer screen, but the exercise give me the natural endorphins and dopamine I need to recharge my energy tank for the day.

4. Minimized my home

Adding a little touch of Marie Kondo to my home has really helped me not get distracted so much through out the day. It’s also allowed me to be strict with my time which makes it possible to get more shit done.

To learn more about how minimalism has really helped me as a self-employed work from home mom listen to:

5. Focused on 1 thing at a time

One of the hardest things to do is to focus on one thing at a time, but with practice it’s gotten easier. I’ve actually created a fun way of doing this that gives me all the endorphins my ADHD brain needs in order to follow through with this.

Check out this 15 second video to learn how I use post-its to get shit done:

6. Started to grow my community

Having a community of other creative entrepreneurs whether that’s a membership, a free Facebook group, or a Discord Group, will help you continue to strengthen the concept of Community over Competition.

Aside from groups, finding a few people that you can connect with and talk about what it’s like being self-employed allows you to feel less alone.

7. Understood that Free = Leads

The concept of freebies used to bug me. Not because I hated giving free value away but because I used to think EVERYTHING I did as an entrepreneur should make me money. Or worse, thought everything I did was worth more. Learning and understanding why free value equates to leads that turn into repeat clients was a game changer.

8. Stopped sharing my ideas

One of the best habits I got into was when I STOPPED telling everyone my ideas before they were either ready for launch or I had my action plan built out. Aside from the unnecessary pressure it brought, I noticed the more I stopped telling people my ideas, I more ideas I actually finished.

Another aspect to this, was it’s harder for someone to steal your idea and “do it first” if they don’t know what you’re working on.

9. Grounding myself

Grounding is also known as Earthing - it’s a therapeutic technique that helps you realign and regulate your nervous system. It’s the process of getting into the moment and connecting with the energy of the earth.

10. Scheduled everything

Literally schedule everything - monotasking, cleaning, working, family time, fun time. I’m strict with my time so I can be free for the rest of the day, which lead to working 3hrs a day.

11. Invested in myself so my business would grow

If you don’t have the tools or knowledge to get to the next figure (4 figure, 5 figure etc) in your business then you’re not prepping your business to get there. We can only do so much on our own. When I started hiring people to help facilitate virtual work sessions, healing and meditation, and coaching - that’s when I was giving myself the tools I needed to take my business and mindset to new levels.
